The Sultan Hassan Mosque, which was built between 1356 and 1363 for the Mamluk Sultan Hassan el-Nasi, rises at the foot of the citadel over a rock slope.

This mosque is also considered one of the largest, not only in Cairo but in the whole Islamic world. It was meant to house some four hundred students.

The Madrassa-Mosque was built according to the cruciform, an open courtyard surrounded by 4 liwans. It contains 4 Madrassas or religious schools.
